Williams Woods Project

About the Project

Williams Woods Nature Preserve is a 563-acre forested property owned by the Ozark Highlands Trail Association (OHTA) outside of St. Paul, Arkansas. The property is located on a forested mountain and is the site of three historic homesteads.

The Williams Woods Project will run through the spring of 2010 and exists to investigate and document the historical and natural features of Williams Woods, digitally map the property using Geographic Information System (GIS) software, research conservation land management options, identify potential buyers, and generally provide service to the OHTA in their search for a new owner. In addition, Williams Woods will serve as a model to develop a plan for interdisciplinary conservation and a framework for dialogue on the assessment and sustainability of such sites.  This project will help the OHTA and future owners continue the legacy of conservation and public access, and expand the goals of research and education.

Primary funding for these tasks comes from the Centennial Scholars Program at Barnard College. The Centennial Scholars Program funds 15 students from each graduating class to "undertake investigations in areas of personal interest that culminate in projects presented to faculty and peers."

Funding was also generously given to the Williams Woods Project by the Ozark Society.
